Long Coats & Lab Coats for Ketupat & Lemang
Alhamdulillah, never would I imagine to be able to live out one of my wildest dreams – to attend, experience, study and conduct research in a remote and isolated research station. The White Sea Biological Station is located in one of the many districts of Russia (Murmansk region) and situated within the Arctic circle.
The journey here almost took a whole 24 hours including a 16-hr international flight (obviously), a short domestic flight, a 3-hr car ride and finally a 15-min boat ride. This lengthy journey required a much earlier head start. This meant that my parents and I had to leave a few days before Aidil Fitri.
This happened to be the very first time me having to celebrate Aidil Fitri without the rest of my family, eating rendang and ketupat before the ‘Salam-salaman’ which usually led to duit raya. However, in the pursuit of gaining valuable and once-in-a-lifetime skills and experience, huge sacrifices have to be made.
Thanks to Dr Izwandy Idris, such a dream is realised much sooner than I expected. After TONNES of discussions and suggestions with a few hiccups along the way, I was finally accepted by the Moscow State University to have me at their research station. For that, thank you very much Dr Izwandy for giving me this incredibly rare opportunity.
To my parents – no amount of words would be sufficient to describe the sacrifices that have been made in order for me to get here. Fully financing the internship costs, the various trips to and from the Russian consulate as well as getting me well-equipped with the clothes and equipment I need for this course are just to name a few. For that, I will try my very best to succeed in my studies to make you proud. I love you Mama and Papa.
I would to also like to take this opportunity to thank my family, friends and lecturers for your never-ending support, well-wishes and doa in making this internship happen. Thank you very much everyone.
Do svidaniya for now. Thank you for taking the time to read my first article. See you soon!
